As all of you know ripping is a serious offense on all parts. It adds points up here on Naruto-Boards if you rip. But have you ever really thought about what is considered ripping?

Here, I will be explaining what ripping is (in the digital world), what forms their are, how to identify it, and what is considered.

Ripping is really the same as plagiarism.

Ripping is you taking someone else's art and claiming it as your own. For example, if I were to find this c4d i liked and i copied the layer and pasted it into my tag, that would be ripping. This could be anywhere from poems to signatures, but I am explaining the forms of ripping signatures and artworks that are digital. Their are various forms of it, and it happens frequently.

But getting more in depth to ripping:
Stocks, C4D'S, Renders could all be took in account for this area.

Drake Album Cover
If I were to take this album cover for a Drake album and use it in a sig, that would be ripping.

Why?

- Because first off, you don't own the album cover.

- Second off, because you didn't take the image.

- Third, the album art is copyrighted; meaning you cannot edit the album cover whatsoever and claim it as yours.

Complete ripping - taking someones signature and putting in your signature space.
Layer ripping - taking a layer from someones tag and using it in your tag.
Idea ripping - Not an actual offense, but taking someones idea and using it.
Style ripping - Again, not an actual offense; but taking what someone does completely by their self.

If you ever find a tag, you should look further into the details of the tag.

If I felt like I've seen this tag before (or something like it); I should look further into it.

Once you look further into it, you need to have actual evidence to move further into the case.

Once you get proof,

You can finally visually show them what is wrong, if it isn't already blatant enough.

Here's an example;

You caught a ripper.

This is a tool you can use to identify rips easier.
Kind of like the FBI taking a thumbprint, this is somewhat similar.

TinEye is a Reverse Image Lookup tool.

Google also has one which is less known, but this can be accomplished by going to the Google homepage and pasting a direct image link into the search box and then click search images. It then scans the whole Google Cloud Database for similar looking images in two categories:

- Pixel Form
- Colors

Google's technology is so advanced, it sometimes tells you what the image is of or contents of it.

Well, if you ever wondered what is considered ripping, here it is:
Taking layers is considered ripping.
Editing art barely is considered ripping.
Taking an exclusive c4d is considered ripping.
Using a copyrighted image is considered ripping.

What isn't?
Taking ideas is not ripping.
Following PSD's step by step without taking layers from it is not ripping.
Using anything on the Resources section on dA is not ripping.

Be careful for what you take, and look carefully to make sure you can use it.
You only end up hurting yourself in the end.

Okay, most have heard about a site called DeviantArt.com which contains artworks and resources, but some people misuse it on accident or on purpose. This is why they classify works in certain sections and have copyright and Creative Commons licenses. Be extra careful on deviantart and if you're not sure; it's best to ask the creator.

If you have any questions, or anything to add; comment with them below.

so taking someones style is ripping? Thats gay, this whole topic is pointless besides the part where you define what ripping is.
If taking someones else's style is ripping then half the people on n-b are ripping .-. via tutorials
EDIT: If its someones (own) style then i guess i will agree to some point that it is ripping

Topic stickied for being helpful. I'd also ask that the creator expand this topic to cover DeviantArt. A lot of people use work from DeviantArt without realizing that it is often times ripping.

No, not necessarily.
If you have permission, or if it's in a pack; use it.
It's not your fault and the only one to be blamed is the creator of the pack.

is ripping if you see an art made by someone else and then you dont copy it or use it as your art but you make an art similar to that but different style
